Regrettably, I Am About To Cause Trouble

“Regrettably, I Am About to Cause Trouble” by Amie McNee

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a fantastic book. Truly. And I have to start by saying thank you to my friend Jessica for gifting it to me, because this is exactly the kind of nudge I needed. I haven’t picked up a standalone novel in a long time and I kept putting this one off.

From the very beginning, everything moved. There was never a lull, never a comfortable stopping point. You know those books where you say, “Okay, one more chapter,” and suddenly it’s 11:47 PM and you have responsibilities in the morning? This was that. There was absolutely never a good place to stop.

Maude… I wanted to dislike her for her attitude and viewpoints. I really did. But the deeper we got into her struggles, the more I appreciated her. She was messy in a way that felt human. The only moment I had that tight-chest frustration was her (((SPOILER))) ultimate betrayal of Anne. And even then, I understood the reasoning behind it. That’s what made it powerful. And Anne’s final words? No blame. Just love. That hit. I do wonder, will Maude forgive herself even with her aunt’s words.

I also loved how every character tied together. The absurdity of the time period was woven in so well. Fear the witches … but also please come fix this problem for us. The irony was sharp and smart without being heavy-handed.

I listened to the audiobook, and the narration was fantastic. Amie (both author and narrator) is a quick talker, but somehow nothing felt rushed. The pacing matched the urgency of the story perfectly.

Favorite character? Rufus. Or Hildi. (Apologies if I’ve spelled that wrong. I am a book listener, not a book reader.)

I highly recommend this one. Even if you’re a die-hard series girl like me, this standalone is worth breaking your routine for.
