I wanted this story to go in a completely different direction, but even when it didn’t, I couldn’t deny that Riley Sager had delivered another five-star read!
This was one of those books that had me struggling with my rating, not because I didn’t love it, but because I had a very specific idea of where I wanted the story to go. And it didn’t go there. AT ALL. Yet somehow, I still loved the ride!
I’m also struggling to say much without giving something away, so bear with me.
First, one of the main characters shares a full name with a friend of mine, which made it nearly impossible not to picture her throughout the story. 😂 Second, there was a particular situation involving a confession that had me scratching my head. If the goal was to avoid the appearance of coercion, well… that was EXACTLY what it looked like! Not that it ultimately mattered.
What I absolutely LOVED were the multiple perspectives and dual timelines. They kept me questioning everyone and everything. Marin was easily my MVP! Smart, logical, curious, and refreshingly capable, she was exactly the kind of FMC I love rooting for.
And everyone else? TRUST. NO. ONE.
Sager delivered such a unique blend of paranormal and real-world horror that I never quite knew what to believe. The uncertainty was half the fun, and I loved how the story kept me guessing.
The audiobook’s three-narrator cast of Maggie Grace, Patricia Santomasso, and Erin Lin complemented the multiple perspectives. Having distinct voices helped me navigate the shifting viewpoints and timelines while staying immersed in the mystery.
This is only my second Riley Sager book, but I’m officially a fan through and through. I can’t wait to dive into more of his twisted storytelling!
