I was drawn to “Until the Last Light Goes Out” by its gorgeous cover and intriguing premise, and while it didn’t completely hold my attention, I loved the emotional complexity of its characters and the way everything came together!
I’ve been on a YA thriller and horror kick lately, so I was especially excited to dive into this one. The beginning immediately pulled me in, and I thought the overall storyline was fantastic. Unfortunately, I struggled to stay engaged during the latter part of the middle, where the pacing lost some momentum for me. Thankfully, the ending brought everything together beautifully and reminded me why I was so intrigued in the first place!
One of my favorite aspects was the character dynamics, particularly between KJ and Paige. Relationships are rarely one-note, and I appreciated how their connection reflected that. Love, heartbreak, anger, animosity, respect, and loyalty can all coexist, and I loved seeing those complicated emotions explored rather than having everything wrapped up in a neat little bow.
The narration was wonderful! Carrie Coello and Lindsey Dorcus both impressed me with their performances, bringing emotion and depth to the characters. Their storytelling made the complicated relationships feel even more authentic.
While the pacing kept this from being a higher-rated read for me, I still enjoyed the journey and especially appreciated the strong beginning, satisfying conclusion, and beautifully messy relationships. And I vibes with the horror/ thriller vibes of a haunted building, The Kaleidoscope.
