A family full of secrets, a black sheep determined to uncover the truth, and a mystery I enjoyed far more once I let go of my expectations!
“Everyone’s a Liar” was marketed as an atmospheric gothic suspense thriller with a touch of romance, but honestly? It felt much more like a cozy mystery wrapped in family drama. The tension I expect from a thriller wasn’t really there, the romance was minimal and centered on someone I considered a side character, and the promised supernatural element involving a mother’s spirit never quite materialized.
But here’s the thing… once I stopped comparing the story to what I’d been promised, I genuinely enjoyed it!
Livia, the family’s black sheep, returns to the Willows to fulfill the conditions of her inheritance, only to find herself investigating a mystery no one else seems particularly interested in solving. With her bestie Bryce, an FBI agent turned local police officer, by her side, the two start digging into secrets and following leads. I enjoyed their dynamic and the family-centered mystery, although a few relationships left me wishing for more depth.
Susan Bennett delivered a lovely narration, giving the characters distinct, nuanced voices that made them easy to distinguish. Her performance complemented the mystery’s more relaxed pacing and made for an enjoyable listening experience.
Ultimately, this was a case of mismatched expectations rather than a disappointing book. Go in expecting a family drama with a cozy-ish mystery rather than a suspenseful thriller, and I think you’ll have a much better time!
