A thriller with some genuinely surprising twists that unfortunately never delivered the tension or suspense I was hoping for.
I’m sorry, but “The Not So Happy Couple” just wasn’t for me. I appreciated the story itself, and there were some big twists that should have had me on the edge of my seat, but the execution consistently fell flat. Even the final showdown, which should have been the most intense moment of the book, felt anticlimactic. The tension just never built enough for those revelations to have the impact they deserved.
And then there’s Marissa. I absolutely cannot stand a weak female main character, and Marissa might be one of the most frustratingly weak-minded FMCs I’ve encountered. I struggled with her decisions and found myself more irritated than invested in her fate.
I kept waiting for the narration to bring some much-needed intensity to the story, but it never quite got there. I loved their voices, don’t get me wrong, but I expected more oomph in that final scene.
Ultimately, I think the bones of a compelling thriller were here, but the lack of tension, underwhelming delivery, and frustrating protagonist made this one a miss for me.
