A super cute holiday romance with heartfelt moments, but a leading lady I just couldn’t root for and a love story missing that spark.
There was so much I loved about this short little holiday romance, but ultimately, I was left wanting more!
I read A LOT of romance, and this might be the most G-rated, conservative romance I’ve come across. Nothing wrong with that, although I typically prefer my romances somewhere between PG-13 and R. My issue wasn’t the lack of spice, though. It was the lack of TENSION. Even my sweetest, squeakiest-clean romances have some romantic chemistry, and Harper and Liam just didn’t have it. I struggled to believe their attraction, let alone their budding relationship.
Now, Val and Charles? GIVE ME MORE! I would have happily followed those two around for an entire book of Christmas shenanigans. I’ve never read a senior romance, but apparently, I’m ready for one!
Unfortunately, Harper and I did NOT vibe. Even when her grandfather called her out, she seemed incapable of acknowledging her own faults or offering a genuine apology. And the way she talked about Val? Ughhh. Liam, sir, you can do better!
Eleanor McCormick did a lovely job with the narration. I listened at 1.75x speed and appreciated her strong voice and ability to distinguish the characters. I would have preferred dual or duet narration to bring a little more life to the romance, but McCormick delivered a solid performance.
Ultimately, this was a very slow burn with a super cute storyline, some genuinely heartfelt moments, and an FMC I had a difficult time rooting for. I just wish the romance had given me a little more Christmas magic!
