A charming, heartfelt romance about finding someone who loves you exactly as you are while encouraging you to become the best version of yourself.
As a Vegas girl of 13-ish years, I loved seeing my city as the backdrop for Lucy and Julian’s love story! Jessica Fowler mixes real locations with a little creative license, and I was perfectly happy to go along for the ride.
Lucy was wonderfully relatable, and her dynamic with her ex, Owen, made it impossible not to root for Julian. And Julian? GREEN FLAG! The way he calmed Lucy, embraced her quirks, and encouraged her to pursue the fellowship she’d been dreaming about was everything Owen hadn’t given her in four years.
I also appreciated that Julian had a meaningful story of his own. His family’s experience with deportation, his previous marriage, and his journey to becoming a lawyer added emotional depth and timely relevance. I loved that Lucy was genuinely invested in understanding his past rather than simply falling for the handsome man (Shadow-daddy) in front of her.
My one little gripe? That birthday dinner scene! Jess may have called it a boss move, but I was cringing. It felt more about Owen than Julian, and I wanted their shared moments to be about them and not some weird version of revenge.
The narration by Lilith Evergreen and Giordan Diaz brought Lucy and Julian’s personalities and emotional journeys to life. Their performances complemented this sweet, PG-13 romance and made it an enjoyable listening experience. I will say there was something a little off about the sound – with Diaz coming through very softly. I ended up adjusting the volume in my speakers for all of his chapters.
Overall, a lovely reminder that the right person won’t ask you to change who you are. They’ll help you become even more yourself.
