Some stories are less about the suspense and more about the darkness people are forced to survive.
First, can we talk about that COVER?! Before I read a single word of the blurb or glanced at the tropes, I knew I needed this book in my life.
“BYRD” hooked me right out of the gate, although I wouldn’t necessarily classify it as a traditional thriller. For me, it read more like an incredibly dark, emotionally charged family drama filled with trauma, complicated relationships, and deeply flawed people.
It’s impossible not to feel for Byrd and everything she’s endured. Her parents? Absolutely abhorrent. Disgusting, really. And then there’s Jason. While he had some redeeming qualities, many of his struggles were consequences of his own choices. Still, I’m glad his path crossed with Byrd’s, because their connection added an important layer to the story.
I did have a couple of challenges. I typically gravitate toward stories told from a woman’s perspective, simply because I find them more relatable. I also felt that certain elements were revisited a little too often, which occasionally slowed the momentum.
I feel like we spent this entire book getting to know Byrd through someone else’s eyes. We learned about her circumstances, her trauma, and how others perceived her. But I want HER perspective. I want to get inside her head, understand her thoughts, and discover who Byrd really is beyond everything that’s happened to her.
And that’s what has me curious about what comes next.
