This book confused me, mostly because it felt like the majority of the story and the final conclusion were written for two completely different genres.

For most of the book, the tone is pretty serious. Sure, we have excessive hashtags and some ridiculous mommies, but at the heart of the story are two sisters who have both struggled with addiction. When one goes missing, the other goes all in trying to uncover the truth about what happened to her.

And then we get to the ending.

Suddenly, it felt like I had wandered into a comedy or satire. The way the mom squad completely sheds their established personas and becomes something else entirely was so over-the-top that I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. It was such a strange tonal shift from everything leading up to it.

That said, I really did enjoy most of the book. I liked the characterization of the sisters and their complicated relationship, and as a mom, I can attest that these mommy groups were represented pretty accurately. It’s also exactly why I’m not part of one. 😂

I also loved that some characters were given redemption arcs, while others went in quite the opposite direction. There were definitely people whose true colors I enjoyed watching come out.

Brittany Pressley’s narration was great. There are a LOT of characters in this one, many with very distinct personalities, and she did a nice job making them feel unique and easy to distinguish.

Overall, I liked the journey much more than the destination. The ending just didn’t feel like it belonged to the same book I had been listening to.
