This was a slow burn for me, but once it got going, the payoff was absolutely worth it.
Fourteen chapters in, I was continuing mostly out of obligation. I wasn’t connecting with the narration, and it felt like nothing was happening. Then chapter 16 hit, and suddenly I was 100% invested. The story turned creepy, dark, and deeply unsettling—and yes, the dog does die. 😭
Charlie was the absolute star: childhood innocence paired with pure evil. Some of the things that came out of her mouth would have had me cackling if she weren’t completely terrifying and actually meant them. I also loved the glimpses into Jack’s past, especially his return to where he grew up.
The narration by Eric G. Dove wasn’t for me, though I know I tend to struggle more with male narrators. I think I would have connected with the story sooner in print, and I’d recommend reading this one if you really want to soak up the tension and creep factor.
