Will I Be Next

“Will I Be Next?” was a well-paced, character-driven thriller that kept me engaged, even if its underlying message ultimately left me uncomfortable.

I’d seen several reviews describing this book as a slow burn, but I actually thought the pacing was spot-on! The story unfolded naturally, giving us just enough information along the way without dragging things out. I also really appreciated several of the characters, finding them surprisingly relatable despite some of the questionable decisions they’d made in their pasts.

The narration by Rose Robinson was decent. I wasn’t entirely sold on her performance in the beginning, but she quickly grew on me as the story progressed. By the end, I’d settled into her storytelling and found the listening experience enjoyable.

⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD ⚠️

Unfortunately, this one just wasn’t for me, and I think it came down to the subject matter and the way it was handled. People in positions of power manipulating others, particularly children, is something I find deeply disturbing. While I recognize that these situations happen in real life and fiction doesn’t have to be comfortable, I struggled with what felt like a narrative encouraging readers to question or distrust someone coming forward as a victim. Especially in today’s world, that messaging just didn’t sit right with me.

Ultimately, I can appreciate the writing, pacing, and characters while still acknowledging that the story itself left me feeling unsettled for reasons that had nothing to do with the suspense.
